It's interesting how this paper of yours (The Pro-Logic Abortion View) seems to insist that women who have been raped be made guilty even though they have already been victimized. Nathan: If I used the word "guilt" in my paper or in the discussion regarding that situation, it's not entirely appropriate. I'm pretty sure when people talk about guilt they mean responsibility for something "bad" that happened. In that case, the resulting pregnancy is not automatically "bad" so instead of her being "guilty" here, we would say she is partially responsible for the pregnancy. The point with all that is, given the reasons for thinking abortion is wrong, shouldn't we take the precautions to avoid wanting an abortion or else rethink some of our absolutes? Don't be a victim. Once again, I'll mention Jeffrey Reiman's Abortion and the Ways We Value Human Life. It seems to me that he makes the important distinction that the reason we think it is wrong to kill an infant is different from the reason we think it is wrong to kill an "older" person. Hopefully, that was seen in my paper. I'd recommend his book to anyone who's interested in the topic. Thanks everyone for your comments and criticisms, but I'm not sure you can help me much more unless you read some of these books...at least Jeffrey Reiman's book... Disagreement with my results isn't helpful to me unless you can point out a problem with how I get those results. My own opinion isn't a democracy. I don't take votes over plain reason. Pro-Choice Advocate P: Oh . . . my . . . God . . . it's . . . back. Why, oh why, continue with this? Surely you're not expecting to persuade anyone with what you seem to call "plain reason" that a woman who is raped is "partially responsible" for any ensuing pregnancy. I sit here, with my two children, as knowledgeable about pregnancy as I suspect anyone on this board, aghast at the very notion. Nathan: I continue because I still judge there to be something terribly inconsistent about condemning infanticide (popular opinion I'm pretty sure) and allowing abortion (more of a 50/50 opinion out there). Why would anyone who believes abortion to be terribly wrong traverse the world without several precautions to avoid pregnancy/impregnating against one's will unless one were willing to take the risk and not want an abortion if something like that were to happen? Then, if someone says, "but I think abortion is okay" then I can give no convincing evidence that their opinions, taken as a whole, are anything but nonsense unless they think that infanticide is also okay. |
